I have the choice of doing French or German, which language do you think I should learn. Also I hear much of Switzerland speaks German, so I suppose I should take German if I want to do my training here, but which is easier to learn amongst these two. I speak English. Please advise.I am studying hospitality in Switzerland and wish to do training here. Could you please advise me on languages
It totally depends on where you are going.
A lot of tourist areas are in the German speaking parts of Switzerland, but French is spoken in the 4 Western cantons Genf, Jura, Neuenburg, Waadt. 3 cantons are officially bilingual French and German: Bern (with a German majority), Freiburg und Wallis (where the majority is French speaking).
The Swiss nearly all understand Standard German, even most of the French speakers, and they will try hard to speak it to foreigners, although not always successfully. ;-)
I think you should go for German, it would give you more of a choice of where to go, but I suspect you'd find French easier to learn, as a native speaker of English.I am studying hospitality in Switzerland and wish to do training here. Could you please advise me on languages
majority people in Switzerland speak German (about 65%). There is only 20% that speaks French. I would investigate the area you are trying to do your training before you settle on the language (however as mentioned above, there are number of German dialects that would make it harder for you to converse and as far as Germany goes, people there would rather talk to you in broken English,French,Italian...or any other language than hearing you speaking not excellent German to them).
On personal note - knowing both languages - I would rather study French than German :~)
The German dialect that you would learn amongst those people would require sub-titles for most other German speakers. Perhaps French would give you broader options (ranging from France, Belgium, and the Middle East)
