Advise on backpacking alone in Europe?

I am 24 and I am very interested in visting Europe this summer. Being that I work full time I can only request 2 weeks off. I have no idea about backpacking and would be doing it myself. I would like to visit Spain, Czeck, or Italy. So if anyone could give advice that would be great.Advise on backpacking alone in Europe?
Sounds like a great vacation. Be sure to plan for food, shelter and clothing needs. Since you will be backpacking, you will need to have the lightest available equipment. See the website below for food, clothing, shelter and advice.

I spent just under 2 weeks in Italy. I saw Verona, Venice (2nights), Montepulciano, Rome,Florence (3 nights each) and Bologna. Apart from Venice which was much smaller than I thought I did not have enough time to see any place properly, but enough to get an idea and feel. In one day (venice to montepulciano via Florence ( in train station waiting for train) and Siena ( then missed a bus!)...but I literally spent the ENTIRE day travelling. I was stressed and frustrated by how long it took, so don't do too much. I would do Italy and Chech Republic as they are close together and decent size to explore in that time...OR do only Spain as its a much larger country. I only went to one area, south of Barcelona so have not seen much of it.

I can recommend all the places I saw in Italy. Verona was lovely, Venice was unique ( but as I said it was a lot smaller than I thought and you can do it in a day). Verona and Venice are about an hour-hour 1/2 from each other by train ( see trenitalia website for costs and times of trains which you pay for distance...)

Bologna has a real medieval feel. I only had an afternoon there before flying out the next morning so I did not do it justice.

Siena is lovely and is also medieval but in
I had a great time doing just that 2 summers in the row. Go have a look at Eurorail website as going by train is a good way to see a lot. Focus on one area, where you are talkinmg about is too spread out. Maybe 1 week in italy. Fly into Rome, go up to venice, florence etc. Then fly to Spain, for 1 week. Use trains to get around within coutry. Youth Hostels are seen by some as roughing it but you will meet a lot more people and make friends.
many kids do it and chances are you will meet up with some and travel together....Check for ideas on the net.
